Why we do it

  • If we build up education, we don't need to build up jails

  • Addictions and mental health are health issues first
  • What we've done

  • Many inmates have a diagnosis of mental health issues, therefore we have partnered with Community Mental Health to provide professional mental health workers on site.

  • Many inmates have a diagnosis of an addiction, therefore we have partnered with Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health to provide a professional counselor on site.

  • Created monthly meetings, with community leaders, known as “round tables”

  • Assigned detective to human trafficking and elder abuse

  • Created cooperative operations to provide Dispatch, Fire Investigations and SWAT

  • Enhanced our focus on inmate rehabilitation and life skills

  • Brought in new technology to modernize and enhance communication and finance tools for inmates and their family
  • What we're doing

  • Implementing Mobile Vehicle Recorders and body cameras for personnel

  • Crime-Mapping Software to better target crime and offer detailed statistics to citizens

  • Richard just advised on a proposed bill in the State to create community alert systems for situations such as active shooters or hazardous materials release

  • Similarly, working with legislature to address weaponized personal drone devices
